  1. Care-experience and lived- experience led with a CEP Steering Committee advising.

  2. No Care Leaver cut-off age. All ages can access support and mentoring.

  3. Inclusive and mindful of the intersectionality of CEP with class, disability/neurodivergence, race, sex, sexual orientation, pregnancy & maternity, gender reassignment, marriage & religion.

  4. Our message is communicated from a position of hope. Mentors are to recognise the individual strengths of mentees and encourage them to see what they contribute as assets to the legal profession.

  5. LWC does not participate in sensationalism. LWC is aware of the disadvantages of CEP but does not contribute to the sensationalised stories.

  6. LWC is an apolitical organisation.

Our Anti-Racism Statement

Anti-Racism Statement

LWC is committed to ensuring fairness and equality and does not tolerate racism. We are anti-racist and celebrate the rich diversity of our members, mentors, mentees and the people we support.

 

Anti-racism goes beyond thinking racial prejudice is wrong; it understands that racism is systemic across all structures of society. It accepts that truly dismantling racism requires us all to work towards change. Racial inequality exists and we accept we must play an active role in championing change addressing societal, systematic, and everyday racism within our profession and the wider community.

 

Our aims for LWC

 

  • Ensure our steering committee is representative of black and minority ethnic voices.

  • Ensure there is a zero-tolerance policy for racism. 

 

This includes

 

  • Working with and attending events of The Black Care Experience.

  • Listening to and empowering the voices of black and minority ethnic care-experienced people.

 

Achievements to date

 

  • Ensuring LWC is care-experienced led with those from different cultural backgrounds.

  • Decisions are made with the involvement of a diverse Steering Committee.

  • Diversity data is collected.

 

LWC is committed to real and sustainable change, and we will continue to monitor and update our anti-racist work by reviewing and reflecting on its progress on an ongoing basis.
